Books bring to us the magic of bygone eras, help us transcend boundaries, and are a repository of

knowledge. The aim is to facilitate the users to have a good understanding of themselves, the people they meet

andthe world around them. Our endeavour is to make Library not only supportive and integral part of the school

butalso provide a mechanism for choice and exploration beyond the confines of textual educational needs

suiting individual requirements.

OVERVIEW OF THE LIBRARY

The library is a place where students and staff of the school come to spend some of their spare time in a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere browsing books and collect information on many related subjects of academics, sports, current events and career opportunities. This is a place where creative ideas take birth and exciting innovative and new experiences take place. The librarians encourage and help them in their search. This is thus an information centre where every visitor’s queries are answered or assistance is given to adequate search. The librarian thus acts as a guide to the collector of all information required by the visitor’s. Ahlcon International School has two libraries one is the “Central Library” and one is “Junior Library”. Central Library serves all the staff members and students from class VI to XII. Junior Library serves from class Nursery to V. Libraries have adopted an open access system for easy access to the books and follows a classification system which is simple but elaborates enough to permit quick location of the search material. Both libraries are Computerised. The libraries have been tastefully finished to make then attractive, comfortable and fully functional. There are more than 16,000 books along with a large number of Journals and Periodicals and number of Newspapers. Central Library also has number of educational CD’s on different subjects which gives fictional depiction and keep the user interested to cater to all types of information and provide a warm and inviting atmosphere. Besides these book jackets are imaginatively displayed to attract the attention. The display boards give interesting information on current affairs. Libraries not only provides physical space in which various media are stored but has the potential to introduce young pople to the world of literature and vast amount of information and enable them to develop skills that will enhance their lives as adults. In order to inculcate reading habits amongst students students and staff and encourage optimum utilization of available resources, the librations generally generate curiosity about the material available in the library and help then to identify and obtain what they want.

List of activities undertaken by the library

Besides a serene atmosphere for collection of information in different areas of knowledge, the library also arranged several activities to keep up the interest of all users which are briefly mentioned below:-

1.Soon after beginning of the new academic session we demonstrate the system of locating / searching any publication of their interest, how the books are classified and placed so as to make it convenient to locate any publication by the readers.

2. Students are advised to maintain a diary for writing reviews and comments of the Publications read by them. We collect these diaries twice in a year and evaluate the interestof each user in different areas. Based on this evaluation we arrange for distribution of prizes to good readers in each class.3. All heads of Departments are invited from time to time to review their subject books available in the library and obtain their input on the suitability of various publications as well as suggestions for additional publications required by them. Latest catalogues of different publishers are made available to them for this purpose.4. A suggestion book is maintained for inviting suggestions from staff as well as students which is reviewed from time to time and necessary action taken to augment the library and its resources.

5. A subject week relating to each subject such as Physics, Chemistry, and Hindi etc is arranged from time to time. All the articles, journals and books on the subject are displayed and suggestions obtained for additional needs if any. The exercise focuses the attention of the readers on each discipline.

6. A library week is arranged every year and a number of activities relating to the library are carried out. The aim is to showcase the role of library in and education institution. During this week an exhibition of books is arranged with the assistance of 2-3 leading publishers, students and staffs are requested to see/purchase publications of their choice.

7. Students and staff enthusiastically take part in various activities held during the library week. Students show their skill in designing innovating book marks and book jackets to keep their interest alive in different types of publication.

8. An author student session is organized by inviting some eminent author and letting the student meet and interact with him.

9. Students also stage a skit or any other programme highlighting the importance of books / reading.

10. Teachers are especially encouraged to read books. They can order any book they think is useful in the library. Suitable incentives are also awarded to the teachers for effective use of library.11. A Library Newsletter is also published quarterly which details the latest position about new arrivals and reviews of important books by the students and staff and also highlights other activities of the library.12. Library is also a member of British Council Library amd American Library.
