A workshop on the SCHOOL LIBRARY VISION-2025 subject was held in this school on 7th May 2010. Librarians from 24 schools of Delhi and NCR region participated. The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Ashok Pandey Principal of the School. In his welcome address he mentioned that a nation that reads is the nation that prospers and libraries are the means of providing incentives for reading and perpetual education. They act as an instrument of change by changing the attitude of the persons using library facilities . He shared his experience in the evolution of the libraries from the rudimentary stage at village level to the present modern libraries.
The participants were addressed by the following experts in the area of Library and Information Science.
1) Prof C.P. Vashisht, Ex-Professor ,Delhi University ,Deptt of Library and Information Science.
2) Mrs.Kalpana Dasgupta, Adviser (ICSSR) New Delhi.
3) Shri R. Vijay Shankar, Head Young Audience ,British Council New Delhi.
4) Mrs.Prem Dhingra, Library Consultant Ahlcon International School.
Mr.Vijay Shankar gave demonstration of latest library techniques and systems.
He emphasized on the changing face of the libraries land widespread use of modern technology by present day libraries.
Prof.Vashisht mentioned that the students who have library support perform much better compared to those without any library facilities. He also mentioned that librarians should be given opportunity to take part in conferences, seminars, workshops and short time training courses organised at different times. Such exposure improves the performance of working librarians. He suggested that a few library journals brought out by professional organizations
should also be subscribed so that the librarians can go through them ,update their knowledge and bring improvement in their libraries. The librarians should so be encouraged to contribute papers in journals and seminars by sharing their experiences and suggesting improvements in library services. A proper infrastructure for this should be created in the school.
The present system of each library working in isolation should give way to a coll-
aborative working by networking and sharing resources of each other.
The active role of library and librarian in promoting educational standards by making available wealth of information was emphasized by Mrs.Kalpana Das. The need for active involvement of library with the teaching staff would lead to an improvement in the quality of education ,she added, Giving priority to library always leaves an impact on students personality,achievement and performance in studies. Mrs. Dasgupta did not agree that reading habits are declining.
In the end Mrs.Prem Dhingra stated that a Library plays a major role in achieving academic excellence .It occupied the position of nerve centre solutions of all problems relating to academic activity can be solved.
In the deliberation and feedback session Librarians reached the conclusion on the wing :
1) There should be creation of teachers corner and Book Bank in the school Library.
2) Ways and means of dealing with specimen copies and suggestion were given.
3) The procedure to be followed for weeding out of unserviceable material and loss of books. This should be as per the CBSE rules.
4) Issue of Newsletter by the Library should be encouraged ,showing latest
additions and other developments in the library
.
5) To hold regular workshop of this nature in different schools by rotation.
